Because there are scores of excellent poets vying for publication and recognition on the present day U.S. poetry scene, Jeffrey Schultz’s recent successes are truly impressive. In addition to publishing his poems in some of the most prestigious literary journals such as Poetry and the Missouri Review, Schultz is the recipient of a Ruth Lilly Fellowship awarded by the Poetry Foundation. Probably his most impressive recent triumph, though, was his selection as one of four “Discover”/Boston Review Poetry Prize 2009 winners. According to the Boston Review editors, nearly 900 entries were received in the contest—truly long odds.
Schultz was born (1979) in Phoenix, Arizona, then grew up in Fresno where he graduated from Roosevelt High School (’97) before continuing on to receive his BA in English at CSU Fresno (’01) and Master of Fine Arts in poetry at the University of Oregon (’03). He currently teaches at Pepperdine University. He is married to Leah Hanzlicek. In his rare spare time, he enjoys brewing his own beer.
In addition to the journals listed above, Schultz has published his poems in the Boston Review, Great River Review, Grist, Indiana Review, Northwest Poetry Review, Poetry Northwest, Solo Cafe, and Willow Springs.
